Rockcastle students learn about health careers at
Summer Summit
In July, high school
students gathered from six Kentucky counties to
participate in the Berea College GEAR UP/AHEC/WEEA
Summer Summit on the campus of Berea College. Among
those students were Catherine Hounshell, Rachel
Hemsley, Katie Linville, Crystal Holt and Mary
Robinson, all from Rockcastle, as well as students
from Madison, Fayette, Lee, Jackson, and Estill
counties. The weeklong, overnight experience gave
participants a taste of campus life and broadened
their knowledge of career opportunities in health
care.

The camp kicked off on
Monday afternoon, July 12th, with a health career
overview which set the stage for many great learning
experiences through the week. Rockcastle Regional
Hospital’s own Shannon Stevens and Lindsey Gabbard
presented a dietary information session on Thursday,
followed by a respiratory therapy presentation by
Mike McFerron and Rodney Weaver on Friday.
Etiquette training, a
hospital tour, guest speakers and a nursing workshop
are a few more events that led up to what most
campers believed to be the highlight of the camp. On
Thursday morning students had the opportunity to
watch the live feed of a gallbladder removal surgery
by Dr. Joseph Iocono of the University of Kentucky
Department Of Surgery. Each day, sessions were also
taught by GEAR UP Counselors, Nancy Hale, Willie
Addison, and Fred McQueen on applying for financial
aid, scholarships, and college interviews. Each
camper left at the end of the week with a final copy
of an essay to be used with college applications.
Campers wrapped up the
week with presentations which had been in production
for the duration of the camp. Students and Southern
Kentucky AHEC, alike, appreciate the time and effort
on behalf of the medical community and GEAR UP to
make the 2010 Summer Summit an enriching experience.
